Ancient village custom - Castiglione d'Orcia - night between April 30th and May 1st

A tradition particularly felt in Castiglione d'Orcia and in the surrounding countryside is "il Maggio". It is a festival that takes place on the night between April 30th and May 1st. A group of singers and musicians (about twenty), travels through the villages and walks through the countryside visiting the farms, each year different, singing quartiles of brass instruments wishing the return of the good season, good harvests and singing love and the awakening of nature. Each quatrain is followed by a piece of music performed by a small band of instruments. The "tour" ends each year in the village of Castiglione d'Orcia: the maggiaioli walk the streets of the town until the morning of May 1st.

Pienza and the flowers

since 1986 - Pienza - the 2nd weekend of May

'Pienza e fiori' was born thanks to the collaboration of a great nurseryman of pientina origin, prof Sirio Mangiavacchi. The goal was to create a high-quality exhibition market that would enhance the architecture of Piazza Pio II and the Papal Palace. This has been the case for decades. Today with renewed artistic charge and aesthetic motivation, Pienza and the Flowers has been enriched with new episodes and new initiatives that make it one of the most important parties of the town.

Festival of ancient crafts

since 2001 - Pienza - the first week of June

In the name of good food of the past and to have fun with popular music and folklore. During the Feast of the ancient trades of Radicofani it is possible to relive the harvest by hand and the threshing done with the machines of the time. Watch the milking, observe the funeral masters, the leather tanning, how to build bows and try archery. During the party, indoor food stands are set up with traditional country menus.

Festa del Barbarossa

since 1961 - San Quirico d'Orcia - 3rd week of June (Wednesday / Sunday)

It was the year Domini 1155 when the most powerful man of the time, Barbarossa, arrived in the turreted village of San Quirico to obtain the coronation of Emperor. To celebrate the most important episode of its history, in San Quirico d'Orcia, since 1961 every year in the taverns of the districts they wave flags and echo the sounds and the medieval atmospheres, and the street shows of a distant time come to life.
